Our Promise to You

We respect your privacy, both online and off, and will protect your personal information accordingly. Mississippi Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center make the following promises to you:

  • We will protect your personal information to the fullest extent possible.

  • We will never sell or give any of your personally identifiable information (e.g. name, address, email address) to a third party without your permission.

  • We will periodically sell or share non-identifiable aggregate data with third parties for research purposes (no information that identifies any particular individual).

The details of our Privacy Policy are below. You will find the details to be consistent with the promises listed above. We appreciate that our relationship with you is built on your ability to trust how we care for you and your information.

PRIVACY POLICY DETAILS

As a provider of medical content, we understand the sensitive nature of each communication and transaction that we have with you.

Any information that is provided as part of normal patient-physician communications is governed by applicable patient confidentiality laws.

Disclosure of Information

Unless otherwise identified in this statment, Mississippi Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center will not disclose, without a patient's prior consent, any medical or other identifiable information gathered during our normal course of business. In limited circumstances, we may release personal information to third parties (1) to comply with valid legal requirements such as a law, regulation, search warrant, subpoena or court order, or (2) in special cases, such as a physical threat to our users or others. We do have third party relationships with vendors that operate and maintain our equipment, and that may result in them having access to user information. We require that each of our vendors not use or disclose patient information beyond what is reasonably necessary to perform the functions and operations on behalf of Mississippi Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center. Third party vendors are forbidden from disclosing a user's personal information to other entities without express written authorization from us and/or the patient.

Security Policy

It is the policy of Mississippi Sports Medicine that all personnel must preserve the integrity and the confidentiality of medical and other sensitive information pertaining to our patients.  The purpose of this policy is to ensure that Mississippi Sports Medicine and its officers, employees, and agents have the necessary medical and other information to provide the highest quality medical care possible while protecting the confidentiality of that information to the highest degree possible so that patients do not fear to provide information to Mississippi Sports Medicine and its officers, employees, and agents for purposes of treatment.  To that end, Mississippi Sports Medicine and its officers, employees, and agents will--

  • Collect and use individual medical information only for the purposes of providing medical services and for supporting the delivery, payment, integrity, and quality of those services.  Mississippi Sports Medicine and its officers, employees, and agents will not use or supply individual medical information for non-health care uses, such as direct marketing, employment, or credit evaluation purposes.

  • Collect and use individual medical information only--

    • To provide proper diagnosis and treatment.

    • With the individual's knowledge and consent.

    • To receive reimbursement for services provided.

    • For research and similar purposes designed to improve the quality and to reduce the cost of health care.

    • As a basis for required reporting of health information.

  • Recognize that medical information collected about patients must be accurate, timely, complete, and available when needed.  Mississippi Sports Medicine and its officers, employees, and agents will--

  • Use their best efforts to ensure the accuracy, timeliness, and completeness of data and to ensure that authorized personnel can access it when needed.

  • Complete and authenticate medical records in accordance with the law, medical ethics, and accreditation standards.

  • Maintain medical records for the retention periods required by law and professional standards.

  • Not alter or destroy an entry in a record, but rather designate it as an error while leaving the original entry intact and create and maintain a new entry showing the correct data.

  • Implement reasonable measures to protect the integrity of all data maintained about patients.

  • Recognize that patients have a right of privacy.  Mississippi Sports Medicine and its officers, employees, and agents will respect patients' individual dignity at all times.  Mississippi Sports Medicine and its officers, employees, and agents will respect patients' privacy to the extent consistent with providing the highest quality medical care possible and with the efficient administration of the facility.

  • Act as responsible information stewards and treat all individual medical record data and related financial, demographic, and lifestyle information as sensitive and confidential.  Consequently, Mississippi Sports Medicine and its officers, employees, and agents will:

    • Treat all individual medical record data as confidential in accordance with professional ethics, accreditation standards, and legal requirements.

    • Not divulge medical record data unless the patient (or his or her authorized representative) has properly consented to the release or the release is otherwise authorized by law, such as communicable disease reporting, child abuse reporting, and the like.

    • When releasing medical record data, take appropriate steps to prevent unauthorized redisclosures, such as specifying that the recipient may not further disclose the information without patient consent or as authorized by law.

    • Implement reasonable measures to protect the confidentiality of medical and other information maintained about patients.

    • Remove patient identifiers when appropriate, such as in statistical reporting and in medical research studies.

    • Not disclose financial or other patient information except as necessary for billing or other authorized purposes as authorized by law and professional standards.

    • Recognize that some medical information is particularly sensitive, such as HIV/AIDS information, mental health and developmental disability information, alcohol and drug abuse information, and other information about sexually transmitted or communicable diseases and that disclosure of such information could severely harm patients, such as by causing loss of employment opportunities and insurance coverage, as well as the pain of social stigma.  Consequently, Mississippi Sports Medicine and its officers, employees, and agents will treat such information with additional confidentiality protections as required by law, professional ethics, and accreditation requirements.

    • Recognize that, Mississippi Sports Medicine owns the medical record, the patient has a right of access to information contained in the record. 

  • Mississippi Sports Medicine incurs costs when releasing patient information (copying, postage, and so forth) and may charge a reasonable fee to offset those costs.

  • Mississippi Sports Medicine and its officers, employees, and agents will--

    • Permit patients access to their medical records except when access would be detrimental to the patient under the so-called therapeutic exception to patient access.  In such cases, Mississippi Sports Medicine and its officers, employees, and agents will provide an authorized representative access to the patient's records in accordance with law, professional ethics, and accreditation requirements.

    • Provide patients an opportunity to request correction of inaccurate data in their records in accordance with the law and professional standards

All officers, agents, and employees of Mississippi Sports Medicine must adhere to this policy. Mississippi Sports Medicine will not tolerate violations of this policy.
