MISSISSIPPI SPORTS MEDICINE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

The Sports Medicine Fellowship at Mississippi Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center is a 12 month fellowship balanced between upper extremity and lower extremity rotations.  Drs. Gene Barrett and Walter Shelton serve as lower extremity rotation instructors, and Drs. Larry Field serves as an upper extremity rotation instructor.  Fellows rotate every 6 weeks with each of these physicians.  Dr. Jay O’Mara (lower extremity) and Dr. Randy Ramsey (upper extremity) are also actively involved with the fellowship program and afford additional opportunities for fellows to participate weekly in surgical cases.

Dr. Gene Barrett: Dr. Barrett's practice is almost completely limited to sports related injuries of the knee, and the fellows are exposed to a large number of knee reconstructive procedures. He performs over 100 Anterior Cruciate Ligament Surgeries (ACL) per year.

Dr. Larry Field: Dr. Field's practice exclusively involves the treatment of shoulder, elbow, and wrist injuries. Fellows will have extensive exposure to a variety of arthroscopic and open procedures.

Dr. James O'Mara: Dr. O'Mara's practice is exclusively lower etremity. Fellows will be exposed to all lower extremity procedures during their rotation with Dr. O'Mara.

Dr. Randy Ramsey:  Dr. Ramsey’s practice is limited to the upper extremity and includes shoulder, elbow, and wrist cases.  His special interest is in shoulder surgery and wilderness and athletic injuries. Dr. Walter Shelton: Dr. Shelton's practice is exclusively lower extremity. Fellows will have extensive exposure not only to knee surgery and reconstruction but also to injuries in the ankle and hip. Special interests of Dr. Shelton include cruciate ligament reconstruction and allograft meniscal replacements.

Participating surgeons usually operate in two rooms concurrently allowing the fellow to serve with much independence throughout the operating day. Also, freedom is allowed for some variation in the rotations that allows for participation in particularly interesting or unusual cases as they arise.

General duties for the fellowship include attendance at a weekly conference involving a variety of sports related topics and guest speakers. Additionally, once a month there will be a sport related cadaveric dissection alternating between the knee, ankle, shoulder and elbow. A sports oriented journal club meets once per month, and a weekly University Medical Center conference is offered which fellows are free to attend if they so desire. Additionally, the sports medicine fellows are required to help with weekend calls approximately every 4-6 weeks.

One completed research project is a requirement of the fellowship program. The fellow is encouraged to pursue his own research interests during the fellowship, and ongoing or new projects are available through the course of the year as well. Instructors may also assign additional research requirements during their rotation.

Sports team coverage requirements include high school, junior college, and college athletics. The fellow will be assigned a primary college with which to participate closely during the fellowship year. This generally includes football game coverage and a weekly sports injury clinic at the campus. A primary high school team will be assigned as well during the football season.

Malpractice insurance and a stipend will be provided for all fellows throughout the course of the fellowship year. One fully paid trip to a course of the fellows' choice will be provided by Mississippi Sports Medicine Center, and any meetings in which the fellow is representing Mississippi Sports Medicine Center research will be paid as well. Each fellow should expect to participate in a minimum of 400 knee surgeries, 500 shoulder surgeries and numerous elbow, wrist and ankle procedures through the course fo the year.
